WIWT: Thank god for this maxi dress, it’s the only thing I can wear that doesn’t hurt my horribly burnt legs

This weekend in instagrams: early morning photos by the lake, breakfast on the roof, a beach day that ended in a debilitating sunburn on the back of my legs, mexican night, and a trip to the suburbs for memorial day.

Some days, it’s the simple things.

This has been a week full of stress, to say the least. With finals coming up quickly, an interview Friday for the editor position I’ve been vying for and many failed apartment hunts, it’s been a tough week. On top of all of that I had a story assignment sprung on me Tuesday night that needed three interviews.

Needless to say, I was a mess of emotions on Thursday trying to get everything done. Like, embarrassingly so. So much stress crying. Sometimes things are out of your control, however, and you have to just accept it.

This past weekend has been a whirlwind. After all of the stress from friday came to the end, I got lucky and got off of work and treated myself to a pedicure instead. It was a beautiful treat for the afternoon and I couldn’t complain.

Something really special happened that night, however. I went on a run around 730, just about dusk, and I was overwhelmed with how beautiful this city is. Over the past (school)year I’ve been giving Chicago a hard time, not because I hate the city but I often hated the time I was having here. A few choice things have slowly changed my outlook and made everything okay, but as I was running through Lincoln Park and across to the lakefront trail, I literally couldn’t believe how perfect Chicago can be sometimes. Ironically, I had a similar epiphany last year in New York around this same time, but I was leaving afterwards, I’m here to stay now, for now.

In fact, I’ll be here for a while, Today, I got the email that I will be The DePaulia’s Arts & Life editor next year!! I could not be more excited. When I got to DePaul this is what I was working towards, and it’s nice to finally know that things can actually pay off.

After coming to DePaul and Chicago, for a while I felt like I was being rejected. I tried doing so many different things but nothing ever worked. I felt like I was a bad organ transplant that the body, DePaul and Chicago, were rejecting every chance they got.

This weekend felt right though. Everything just fell into place.

Happy 71st birthday to the man who taught me that “rat race choir” rhymes with “society’s pliers”, Bob Dylan!!
Here he is walking along 5th Avenue near Central Park on February 10, 1965. He would release “Bringing It All Back Home” two months later, and freak out the folkie squares with his electric set at Newport that summer. Heady days for the dude from Dinkytown. Photo by Richard Avedon.

One of my favorite dude photographed by one of my other favorite dudes. Highway 61 Revisited is still, in my humble opinion, one of the best records ever released.

Roundup: What I’ve been recklessly spending my money on

I recently told myself I would limit all of my clothing/accessory/shoe purchases to one per month. Seeing money in my bank account again combined with the irrational need for something since summer’s coming, I’ve broken my rule. A few times over. In an attempt to repent my sins, I’m sharing what I’ve collected/waiting for the arrival of over the past month.

June is a new month. Stay strong.

Knit Tribal Print Maxi - White House | Black Market

I went to a work meeting on Sunday because I happened to be home, and as per usual some of the meeting involved a try-on session to test out the new product. I can always talk myself out of something if I just see it on the hanger, but once it’s on me it’s over. Plus I get an employee discount still, so, I made it happen. I’ve never bought a maxi dress because I was scared I was too short, but this one actually fits me, even with flat sandals.

Anomalous Hemline Black Skirt - Romwe

Been lusting after a hi/low skirt for a while now, and I had a $7 off coupon to Romwe for singing up for their emails, so it just made sense. I really hope this looks as good in person as I’m imagining it will in my head.

Oceanside Blouse - Francesca’s Collection

On Friday I mentioned I was going to a dinner with my boyfriend’s aunt and uncle. I was extremely nervous and obviously once I left the house at 830a for the day, I hated what I was wearing by 3p. Francesca’s is on my way home from work, and I get a 15% discount there (when I say “work” it barely means anything because I have 3 separate jobs…oops). The blouse is super lightweight and good for hot days. I ended up wearing it on Saturday as well, and I will say I got a little sticky in it. I was like, 90 on Saturday though.

Striped Tie Top - Gap

I’m panicking. People are going to start wearing swimsuits soon. I’ve had the same bottoms since I was I believe in 8th grade, but I have yet to find a better bottom. I like to wear the boyshort bottoms that actually have some material between the thighs because trust me, no beach/poolgoer wants to see that. So every year or every other year I get a new top to mix it up. This one seemed really interesting because of how low it comes down without being an awkward tankini.

Babooshka Luxxe Turban - Etsy (Babooshka Boutique)

As pictured last week, I’m in love with this headwrap. I originally saw it on pinterest and I was obsessed. This was actually my first etsy purchase and I couldn’t be more pleased. Despite my concern of looking like a fortune teller, I’ve worn this at least 3 times in the past week. Hair up, hair down, it doesn’t matter.

Moldable Printed Bow Clip - Anthropologie

In my defense, I did not purchase this. A few weeks ago I got lunch with my boyfriend before heading to work, and we strolled into anthropologie. I’ve never taken him shopping with me before, so he was intrigued. I didn’t buy anything at the time but I was going around commenting on everything I like. He came back this weekend for our mini 6 month anniversary celebration and got me this bow, the Paris v. New York set of postcards, and a style book. He’s a keeper. This bow is so adorable, and the moldable frame makes it super versatile too.

Steve Madden Reilly Sandal - DSW

These were out of pure necessity. I’m not sure what happened to all of my sandals from last year, but I have no black ones. Zero. Zilch. Obviously that was unacceptable. On Saturday, said 90 degree day, I was walking around and my feet were profusely sweating because I was wearing keds. Mistakes. I finally found these sandals in DSW and  they fit my mammoth wide feet. I thought the toe separator might be uncomfortable, but it totally isn’t.

I realized how bad this is as I typed it all out. I’ll try harder in June, promise. On the bright side - I did sell an old Michael Kors purse on eBay yesterday, so things aren’t as bad.

Weekend Adventures: morning bike rides to Lincoln Park, Metra rides to the ‘burbs, frozen yogurt, and my mom’s cat who keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Not pictured: profusely sweating because my mom wouldn’t turn the a/c on, eating too much pizza/everything, struggling to (still) write a paper and be in school in general, and avoiding NATO protestors

What I Love Today: Kristen Wiig’s Farewell Sketch

It’s always a little sad when someone leaves the SNL cast, but if Kristen Wiig is like any of her contemporaries that left the show, which she obviously is, she’ll continue to have a fabulous career. There are a series of elements in this sketch that make me feel all warm and fuzzy. Such elements include:

  • Mick Jagger being precious
  • Arcade Fire being awesome
  • “Ruby Tuesday” being one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs
  • Kristen Wiig’s dress being fabulous (where can I get me one?)
  • Jon Hamm being Jon Hamm

I haven’t caught all of last night’s finale yet, but this might just top last year’s JT/Gaga combo.

Saturday Night Live | Kristen Wiig’s Farewell Sketch

What are you doing this weekend?

Aside from coping that I still have 2 weeks of school + finals, this weekend has already been and is continuing to shape up into something really great. Considering I usually lock myself away with work, most things are better.

Friday night:
Went to the (kind of) newly reopened Pump Room for dinner with my boyfriend and his aunt and uncle. My meal consisted of : splitting bacon wrapped shrimp (I took the bacon off) and a tomato, basil and fresh mozzarella flat bread, baked salmon with a potato purée, and the most ridiculous sundae I’ve ever had - salted caramel ice cream and candied peanuts and popcorn on a bed of dark chocolate. In the midst of this I may or may not have gotten accidentally tipsy on merlot, but that was purely an accident. Really I was just nervous so I kept my mouth full so I wouldn’t have to speak.

Saturday:
It’s only 1:30pm but I’ve already gone on a bike riding adventure, gone to Starbucks, worked on getting over my fear of biking in traffic, eaten a croissant, gone to the Farmers Market on Division St and interviewed vendors and took pictures for a feature for my journalism class, and now I’m taking the Metra to the ‘burbs to escape the NATO craziness for the weekend in Chicago. As much as I love my home(ish) city, it is not prepared for an international event like this.

The rest of my day will be filled with picture taking, seeing friends at home, and hopefully eating lots of frozen yogurt.

Sunday:
Sunday will be like most of my other weekends, filled with homework. Unlike most, I get to have dinner with my dad which is always a treat. I’m a daddy’s girl, sue me.

What are you doing this weekend? It’s 86 and sunny in Chicago right now - take advantage of it!

If you’ve watched the first episode of HBO’s Girls, you’ll be familiar with the scene when Hannah gets fired from her internship. On the way out her (former) co worker asks to have Hannah grab her a smart water…and a vitamin water…and a Luna Bar. Funny thing, at my internship we are sponsored by smart water…and vitamin water…and Luna. It really hit home. Above is my breakfast this morning, a standard 3 mini Luna Bars. (Taken with instagram)
